HERITAGE

This country which is shaped like a boot is located in the Mediterranean. Any self-respecting student would remember at least a little bit about the rich history of Italy. The ancient Roman Empire, one of the most influential empires in the history of the world, called this part of the earth its home. As such, its influences – from culture to politics – have far reaching effects even into modern times.

It is thanks to Italy that the world was able to move on and leave the Dark Ages behind. Who cannot but recognize the names of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Botticelli? The Renaissance period, literally meaning rebirth, was brought about by the activities of these masters, and more. Even today, these names are well respected throughout the world and their works are valued beyond compare.

THE LANGUAGE

The Latin language, which was the language spoken in the olden days, is now considered defunct. There are still those who learn it for academic purposes. Yet despite this fact, many of today’s modern tongues would not be in existence if not for the Latin language. Cicero’s mother tongue is actually the basis of many of today’s languages. Modern day Italian, French, and Spanish are just a few examples. If you want educate yourself in your holidays, you can do a language course abroad: Franzosischkurse in Montpellier. Improve your English while visiting Ireland: sprachreisen englisch Cork.

MODERN ITALY

Thousands of years of history have brought about a very exciting and stimulating mix in today’s Italy. Though it is as developed as any first world country, Italy retains its Old World charm. You can see a blend of the old and the new in its cities. Ancient buildings paired with modern fixtures, the fastest sports cars run on its cobbled streets, high fashion houses reside in the quaint alleys, etc.

Then of course, we cannot discount the food. It would be safe to say that no person in the world could think badly of Italian food. The simple spaghetti or lasagna never fails to make one’s mouth water at the mere thought of it. Thanks to the countless Italian immigrants around the world, Italian food has gained recognition anywhere you go. Still, there is nothing like the real thing – which you can find in Italy.

EDUCATION

These are just a few reasons people consider Italy to be at the top of the list when it comes to studying abroad. The perfect blend of history and modern amenities makes it an ideal place to learn. Education in Italy is not limited to the classroom, especially if one is focusing on the arts. Whereas in other places you have to view artworks and architecture through a computer or a book, in Italy, one simply has to go out and feast on the beauty.

 Preparing for Your Trip

Trip Preparation

Going on a study abroad program requires that you make essential preparations beforehand. Though it may be similar to a leisure trip abroad, your year or so of studies requires more paperwork and preparation on your part. Perhaps the most essential thing would be your passport. You definitely cannot leave the UK without one. Since Italy is part of the EU, it would be easier to for UK residents to enter Italy. However, you still need your passport. To be on the safe side, make copies of your passport and leave one with your family, one with your school, and keep a separate copy for yourself. As a UK resident, you would not need a visa to enter Italy as a student.

Italy is a very modern country with basically the same amenities that you would find in the UK. However, some things may be different and it is advisable that you pack some essentials with you. It is but common sense to bring along some first aid materials in order to be able to deal with emergencies on site. If you are taking any prescription medicine, it would be best to bring your own supply. However, you should check with the Italian embassy if your medication is allowed to be taken into the country. You would not need to worry about the duty free allowance as this has been abolished for EU member countries. Still, you are required to declare whatever you bring into the country.

Education is very important to Italians. You will discover this fact as you get settled in. As such you should never forget the main reason for your trip – that is to study. You will find that though there are cultural differences between the UK and Italy, it will not be hard for you to adjust. Italians are generally very friendly and welcoming. It should not be a surprise for you if you find new friends within a week or two of your stay. Be prepared to mix and interact with people - both local and international. In fact, look forward to this as it will definitely help you with your academic and social life.

 Accommodations in Italy

Italy Accommodations

Housing arrangements for foreign students in Italy are usually off-campus. Though there are certain academic institutions with residence halls for students, you will probably have to stay in a flat outside of the campus. This means that you would have to live a totally independent life. On the other hand, living expenses might require you to take in other people as flat mates to share your financial burden.

Though is the ideal situation financially, it might be less than ideal in terms of actual living conditions. That is not to say that you will experience lack of space and privacy. It is merely a reflection on your expectations. Living with other people in the same flat requires social skills and etiquette. If you have experienced this before, then it would be no problem for you. However, if you have lived with your parents your whole life or if you’ve never shared living quarters with someone else, then you would have to prepare yourself for some changes.

On the outset, you should make arrangements regarding house rules. Meals are another consideration. Splitting the bills, doing the shopping, cleaning the flat – all these and more should be settled between all the occupants of the flat so as to avoid disagreements and problems in the future. If you have to share the flat with students from other countries, you also have to consider your cultural differences.

The housing complex wherein you will stay may also have certain rules that you have to follow. You should inquire as to “quiet hours” or curfews if there are any. Another consideration would be if guests are allowed in your flat. You should also inquire regarding other specific needs or preferences that you may have. In choosing a place to stay, take a look into the location of the housing complex. You would want it to be near the school. You would also want your flat to be accessible. Check out the transport routes as well as the available amenities such as nearby shops or hospitals.

Living in another country should be a pleasurable experience. Do not add to the burden of your adjustment by choosing your accommodations haphazardly.
